Abigail Graham’s Journey

February 18, 2021 By Christine

The story of Abby is a story of personal tragedy that was overturned by quick thinking, the miracles of modern medicine and Abby’s perseverance. In July of 2019, Abby, a junior at Parkland High School, suffered a stroke while participating in a leadership conference at Lehigh University. Quick thinking by Diana, an adult on site, saved Abby’s life by understanding what was happening and getting her to the hospital in eighteen minutes. This set Abby on a course to do what leaders do, that is to get back up when knocked down and address problems as opportunities to make a better tomorrow for yourself and others.
Abby has been in recovery for eighteen months, and is continuing on a path that should inspire everyone by continuing her studies, playing the cello and being inducted into the National Honor Society. She has endured having a section of her skull removed to allow room for brain swelling, with the skull section placed in storage to again, through a Craniotomy, be put back in place. She suffered a seizure and over the past year has had services provided by three hospitals.  Abby is currently a Pediatric Stroke Patient at CHOP and receives Outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy in King of Prussia to regain use of her arm and leg. She lives with her Mom and three brothers in a rented farmhouse since her family house had to be sold to make family finances more manageable. The family is truly thankful for all the support they have received from their Church, medical professionals, Parkland School District, the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund and a very caring Lehigh Valley community.

Krysta Hankee, a Northwestern Lehigh High School graduate and resident of Germansville, was a compassionate, focused, athletic, and motivated go-getter; “no” was not in her vocabulary. At age 22 her profile of accomplishments in education, athletics and the community filled two pages. In May of 2007 Krysta graduated with a degree in Marketing/Foreign Business after studying at the American University Kogod School of Business in Washington, D. C. and New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Her parents, William and Christine Hankee reveled in their daughter’ s future as she landed a promising position as assistant project manager at Triangle Equities of Whitestone, New York. Her mindset was that of a future leader and she had stated she was going to become Governor of Pennsylvania.
Her potential was never realized as all these dreams were tragically lost on September 23, 2007, when she collapsed in a gym and was declared brain dead five days later. In their deepest period of sorrow, her parents and brother Kyle found comfort in Krysta’s final heroic act through organ, tissue and corneal donorship saving the lives of five strangers and enhancing the lives of many others. In their hearts, they were joyful that a small part of her existence lived on.
But there had to be more.
It is often stated that out of death new life emerges and in tragedy one finds their life’s purpose. Even during their darkest hours, the goal of Krysta’s parents, both retired Kernsville Elementary School teachers, became carrying on their daughter’s legacy.
While Bill and Chris remained in New York to carry out Krysta’s wishes of organ donation, friends, neighbors and the community assisted with burial details, arranged a funeral luncheon, and laid the groundwork for a memorial scholarship at Northwestern School District in lieu of flowers. The scholarship collected $18,000 within a year. Bill stated, “No family is ever ready for their 22-year- old daughter to pass away, but we’re lucky because we learned what a really great community can accomplish in times of need. A caring community is everything.”.
But there still had to be more.
In 2007 Bill and Chris founded The Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund, a 501(c)(3), funded by golf tournaments and many wonderful supporters. The Fund, now partnered with more than 30 Lehigh Valley agencies, maintains and supports the Fund’s three missions:
• To maintain the “Krysta Cares (KC) Flight Club” to implement worthy community building and family support initiatives identifying needs within the community and through partnerships with service providers. Awards include adaptive equipment and “Miles that Matter” gift gas cards which have enabled hundreds of needy individuals to travel more than two million miles for required services.
• To provide Leadership and Community Service Scholarships to worthy students. Applicant prerequisites for scholarship awards at Northwestern Lehigh High School and Lehigh Carbon Community College exemplify Krysta’s community strengthening traits. Scholarship awards up to $4,000 per individual now total more than $129,000. The awardees become part of the Hankee Family as they progress along their educational pathways.
• To increase organ, eye, and t issue donation awareness/ registration and the great need for these gifts of life.
A partnering agency, the Allentown Morning Call, in their 2019 “Be an Angel” campaign coverage quoted Bill – “Losing Krysta was unbelievably difficult, but we discovered that the best way to help ourselves is to help others.”.
Angel Krysta, be proud – through the caring, ambitious legacy your beloved parents, Bill and Chris, have established you live on as a role model for many.

Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund Charges Past Milestone

February 28, 2020 By Christine

This past October at Hideaway Hills Golf Club 64 golfers and volunteers enjoyed a delicious celebration cake recognizing the 2,089,996 miles of transportation provided to local families traveling in search of solutions to critical needs. Many of these families are traveling in unfamiliar surroundings seeking help for their children. The “Miles that Matter” initiative is one of the three missions of the Fund.  It represents the caring nature we all felt in Krysta.  Her willingness to give is represented in our focus on the benefits of Organ Donation. Her life mission of learning and personal development is represented in our Leadership Scholarships. Approximately one third of the more than $200,000 raised over the past nine years comes from golf events. Most of our funding is from a very, very caring community.

Our “Miles that Matter” mission provides GIANT gift cards to families in support of their travel needs.  We are proud of our partnership with GIANT’s Cash for Causes Program because we qualify to purchase gift cards at a five percent discount.  In the past ten years, over $200,000 in gift cards have been purchased from GIANT.  Many of our donors are happy to learn that their donations increase by a few percent.

The two-million-mile mark passed in October 2019 was supercharged during this past Holiday Season.  Through the Morning Call “Be an Angel” program, local charities can submit a three item wish list.  The KHMF wished for gift cards, raffle prize items, and monetary donations.  Over $10,000 was donated and with the GIANT discount increases the mileage to over 2.2 million miles.  The Holiday giving puts us well on our way to obtain our 2020 goal of reaching 2.5 million miles in support of local families in need.

You can join this worthy effort by golfing, sponsorships or donating prize items.
