Half a Million Million Miles Milestone

August 5, 2015 By Christine

500,000 mi2
On July 4th and 5th Olde Homestead Golf Club and the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund initiated a Closest to the Pin Challenge on Hole #9 to raise money to provide services for homeless veterans and their families.  More than two hundred golfers participated and over $1,200.00 was raised.  The money will be used to purchase Giant gift cards with the cards being distributed by two local support agencies.  Case workers at Victory House in Bethlehem and Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living will locate veterans and distribute the cards as to the families in need.

For the past four years the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund has partnered with many local golf courses in it’s “Courses That Care, Miles That Matter” program to provide transportation for families in need.  The July event at Olde Homestead will provide over 13,000 miles of medical travel for the vets and their families.  At the end of the day on July 5th the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund reached and important milestone of providing over a half million miles of medical travel for families trying to fund the high cost of ongoing medical travel.

On the two days of the event the Krysta Hankee volunteers set up a welcome station on the #9 tee box area overlooking the clubhouse and followed a simple plan established by Justin Smith of Olde Homestead.  As the golfers approached the tee box area they were greeted by the volunteers and told that if they donate $5 to support homeless veterans and their families Old Homestead will reward them with a coupon good for $10 off your next round of golf at the club.  In addition, any golfer that lands their ball on the green will receive a free round of golf at the club and the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund will award, golfer’s choice, of a $75 cash prize or a $100 gift card for the Club.  Dominic Carr was “Top Gun” on July 4 by landing his golf ball only 6’7” from the pin with Chuck O’Donnell Jr. winning the day on July 5 by landing his ball 8’4” from the pin.

Discover the other golf courses who have played an important part in providing over 500,000 miles of medical travel for local families on our “Miles that Matter” page.

The Patricia Bostick Dance Center presented the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund with money raised and handmade cards created by the dance students during their PajamaStudents Dance fundraiser. The money raised was more than matched by the Fund and $1000 in gas cards was given to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley, Inc. for families traveling for treatment. Coordinated by Trish Dilg of Paper Bag Child, this shows what a little from so many can accomplish. Thank you to all the dancers who participated and for businesses like Patricia Bostick Dance Studio who continue to give back. Special thanks to Patricia for helping her young dancers not only develop their art of dance but also learn important life lessons through this community service event.Working together
